Or a victim of Decision Paralysis?
I am a fanatic TV viewer and loved reading books … but it all seems a thing of the past now. From single screen (those who lived the era would know) to the current overdose of channels and shows and books, we’ve certainly come a long way. One can now choose from language to genre across multiple OTTs and yet there seems to be an abyss. There simply is too much and still absolutely nothing!
How did we manage this nuisance…?
Dearth of interesting content
I mean you now scroll for hours and put on a show or a movie that the online platform thinks you’ll love and you kind of agree. However, fifteen minutes of watching and you end up scrolling your phone, while the idiot box goes on blabbering in the background. Is it just me or you’ve been there too?
Wise would argue that this behaviour is on account of our growing lack of focus. Irrespective of the age, we’ve been spoiled by the new age gadgets and while I do not completely disagree, I do not totally concur either. Yes, there are colourful reels and glamorous content on social media, but deep inside I am tired of this 10 second quickie nonsense and am craving for something lasting, something meaningful. I would once again love to pick a book that’ll hold me captive and make me read it. I wish to watch something which is more than a typical masala recipe in the name of a show and believe me, I’ve been trying.
What happened to originality or is that even possible anymore?
Everything, from books to shows to movies, now lands in a category. It is either a silly rom-com or a dark investigative setup. Families are squabbling over inheritance or there is an estranged relationship that’ll be fixed over the next few seasons. And don’t even get me started on the creative minds behind reality TV and science fiction; honestly, there seems to be an eerie overlap between the two. And of course, let’s not dare overlook the important subject called ‘feminism’ and let me add here, I am a woman who believed in these virtues … but now, who knows anymore? It seems the need to deliver a message has ousted the basic element of creating something simply entertaining.
The trap of Overstimulation
I for one am a strong supporter of going back to the simpler times. These days creators seem to be obsessed with an overdose of everything. There is a larger-than-life depiction and it seems to have blocked our minds. If the protagonist is gloomy, so is the series. If the main character is peppy, the show will obsess over picture perfect looks. I mean can we for a minute break away from over-the-top art visualizations and focus on compelling story telling.
The solution??
You know before coming here I tried AI. After all, chat gpt seems to have all the answers these days. I got to know my symptoms indicate a condition called ‘Decision Paralysis’ …well thank you for the info!! What am I supposed to make of that? I am unable to enjoy content anymore because there exists the paradox of choice. With too many options, our brains do not register any. Perhaps that could be the case, but I don’t want to believe that I am so spoilt with choices and actually can’t see the loads of excellent stuff right there and therefore I decided to pen my thoughts here, in the hope of interesting solutions. If you have insights on the subject, please be kind and help the lost seeker navigate the path of utter boredom.
