They say AI is going to eat up all jobs. Artificial intelligence will dominate all professions except those where the ‘Human Element’ dominates! But what exactly is this human element and what are the forces at play here?
Decoding the Human Element
Humans, as we all know, are us – the people and the term element implies the intrinsic characteristics of the associated term. Clubbed, the human element refers to the characteristics or components of humans alone and in any social setting. Thus, aspects like conduct and quite importantly communication form the human element. When referring to human element, in context to the occupational world, we are focusing on the soft skill side of the equation.
Artificial Intelligence vs. Human Intelligence
A machine is competent; you can feed in the right software and it shall serve. Humans on the other hand get tired, cannot be automatically programmed and are prone to errors. Even with simple repetitive tasks, humans might not follow procedures as laid down.
For instance, take the simple example of making coffee. AI can control the features of a coffee machine and this technologically superior coffee maker can repeatedly provide the desired experience. Humans on the other hand are prone to yield different results. Depending on the number of tasks at hand, urgency in the situation and even the mood of the person manually making the coffee, final outcome might vary.
Thus when it comes to basic repetitive tasks, AI seems to have an advantage. The regular chores will be much efficiently handled by AI tools. However, this is it as far as AI is concerned. Beyond a point, AI is largely dependent upon human intervention. The systems only work if the human input plays the desired role.
Why is the Human Element important & irreplaceable?
Imagine the hospitality industry…without the care and touch of somebody who understands your emotions and desires, will you be satisfied? How frustrating it is to speak with a machine. Press 1 for English and 2 for Hindi and so on and so forth. Don’t we all prefer to speak with somebody who could assimilate the urgency of the situation and perhaps manage the crisis, without going through the mechanized protocols?
Likewise, consider the domain of art and creativity. Would you want to live in a standard house designed by AI or does the nest of your dreams demand creative infusion of a human?
Even in projects where AI can dominate, without the absolute dose of communication and human coordination, survival is dubious.
It all comes down to the acumen and soft skills!!!
Humans have been programmed to share, to create, to enjoy, to feel and to collaborate. They can think outside the box and can adapt to the changing social norms. We are configured to improve upon ourselves and adapt to the needs of the hour. The key element is the social skill that provides the answer.
